MARTIN SPENCE

Martin Spence - Big Marts - a founder-member and a regular through the 1980s and early 1990s. A batsman of sometimes suspect defence but awesome power - making 184 runs in the summer of 1986 (a record for one of the founders) - top-scoring with 47 in our biggest ever win - and making his own best score of 64* that same year. Won the Double-Wicket competition in 1989. Our regular wicket-keeper when available in between stints on the oil-rigs. He first decreed the Presidential colours of green and black when producing a jumper knitted for him in those colours.

Large, loud and brave - no-one ever tried harder for the side. Killed in a car crash some years since - may he rest in peace.
