THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

v. WANDERERS
24 MAY 1986

WON BY TWO WICKETS
GAYMER'S MATCH

Our fourth full season - but the first match of which we still have a record - and a classic low-scoring game. The Wanderers opened steadily - but the bowlers dominate. Stefan Tevis opens with a spell of seven overs for just ten runs - but the first wicket does not fall until the tenth over. It's 32-1. Jerry Williams come on to take two in his first two overs. It's 40-3 after fifteen overs. Clark and Taylor go cheaply and it's 43-5. Barns is soon run out - but Dunmore starts to find the boundary. When he finally falls to Leslie Hines for 45 in the thirty-first over the score stands at 98-8. The tail adds a handful more - but the Presidents restrict the score to just 113-9 off thirty-five full overs.

We reply - and start with disaster. Laurence Worms run out for nothing. Rob Raeburn caught behind for one. It's 3-2 at the end of the third over. Gordon Sheridan and Florian Eames start to rebuild - but it's slow going. When Gordon falls in the 10th over it's 21-3. Stefan Tevis and Jerry Williams for once both fail to reach double figures. Florian soldiers on - but the fifty does not come up until the twentieth over. Then comes the stand of the match - Florian and Leslie take us to ninety-five - but then Leslie goes for 24 (including the only six of the match). At the end of the thirtieth over it's 96-6 and the bowlers are on top.

Just a single from the next over - 97-6. Two more runs from the next - but Florian finally falls for a hard-fought 39 - and Guy Martin goes four balls later. It's 99-8 and just three overs remain. The frugal Clark comes back - but concedes six including three precious wides. Just two runs from the next - 107-8 - and seven still needed off the last over.

Steve Gaymer to face Dunmore, whose figures off his first six overs are 2-12. He's just accounted for Florian and Guy. But two off the first ball - two more off the second - two again off the third - and the scores are level. You could hear a pin drop. Smack - it's four - and Steve has seen us home with two balls to spare. "That man!" says the scorebook in a jubilant aside.
