THE PRESIDENT'S XI - MATCH REPORT - THE SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY

THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

v. SOUTH AFRICAN EMBASSY
30 AUGUST 1986

WON BY 161 RUNS

It was a sombre group of players who assembled for this one. The match had been arranged by some of our South African contingent - but in those days of apartheid (when South Africa was excluded from international sport) some of the regulars had point-blank refused to play. It had caused much dissension - and those regulars and occasionals who did turn up were irritable and determined to make a point.

Jerry Williams for once went cheaply, but with four of our first five all passing twenty we rattled along at five an over. The highlight was a stand of seventy-six between Florian Eames and Martin Spence for the fifth wicket - Florian going on to make sixty-five (two sixes, six fours) - his highest score for us. Thirty-four of Martin's forty were made in boundaries - about his usual percentage. The innings subsided when Florian was finally out in the thirty-first over with the score on 178 - but we had a good total.

A subdued and quiet tea. The conditions heavy and overcast. How well could they bat? - How well could we bowl? Stefan Tevis had seen something on a length that he could exploit from the North End - so we made a tactical switch of the normally invariable ends. A quiet start - and then three maidens in a row. Stefan and Laurence Worms bowling with as much venom as they had ever mustered together - quick and with prodigious swing and cut. Laurence takes three wickets in seven balls. After eight overs it's fourteen for three - the opening salvo has worked and we rest the bowlers.

Jerry then steps in with guest Miller and they proceed to mop up. A wicket maiden to Jerry - two wickets in his next - and one to Miller in the next. It's 19-7. Some resistance from Moolman, but a spell of 2-5 from Miller and a wicket each to Jerry and Stefan finishes it off. A big and satisfying win.
