v. ROGER MARSH'S XI
22 JULY 1989

WON BY TWENTY-FOUR RUNS
GUY MARTIN'S FIVE-FOR

Presidents to bat first against Roger Marsh's occasionals - some of whom were rather better than that. A slow and cautious start - Laurence Worms and David Doyle inch along to 24 off the first seven overs - Laurence then falls in the eighth. Roger Marsh comes on and has David caught behind first ball - 24-2. Chris Townsend doesn't trouble the scorer - 27-3. And when Keith Willison falls cheaply it's 35-4 - and thirteen overs gone.

Tedder tightens the screw. Big hitters Rob Johnston and Martin Spence depart to successive balls - 41-6. Guy Martin falls for six to new bowler Burrows - 52-7. It's looking bleak - but we are not yet done - Simon Morecroft and Rob Wright start to rebuild.

At twenty-five overs they have put on forty-one and it's 93-7. Two runs from the next over. But then a wicket-maiden from Tedder - Rob Wright goes - 95-8. Simon decides to hit out - nine from the next over - nine from the next - for the loss of Dave Sawtell. When Simon finally departs for a valiant 38 we have rather more than we had dared hope for - 117 all out - but are going to have to bowl exceptionally well.

A wicket third ball to Rob Johnston - another in his second over - 6-2 after three overs - and it's game on. Another wicket to Johnstone - 15-3. But Tedder is proving obdurate - and the score starts to mount - at 42-3 with plenty of time left the game looks to be moving away from us.

Guy Martin is summoned to bowl the thirteenth over - unlucky for some. McDonald surrenders to his first ball - "terrible shot" the scorer felt compelled to note. Tedder caught off the fifth ball - the partnership doubly broken - 44-5.

David Doyle wheels away economically at the other end - a spell that began with two maidens. But the opposition rally - Cunningham starts to gain momentum - and at 75-5 it's beginning to slip away once more. Two wickets from David in five balls - one from Guy at the other end - 78-8.

But David is now bowled out - can we finish it off? Guy moves in for the kill. Two wickets in his last nine balls and it's all over - he's seen the Presidents home with twenty-four runs in hand.
