THE PRESIDENT'S XI - MATCH DETAILS - OLD OXONIANS

THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

v. OLD OXONIANS
29 JULY 1989

WON BY ONE WICKET
AN AWAY MATCH IN OLD DEER PARK

One of our more unusual matches - and a match of three outstanding individual performances. The scorebook is lacking in fine detail - but Rob Johnston's seven successive maidens (seven overs, seven maidens, no runs, one wicket) made up as economical a spell as any of us can have witnessed before or since. Laurence Worms was comparatively profligate at the other end - but came back in a second spell to nip out a budding partnership between Glazebrook and Lewin. Knight and Dave Sawtell kept up the pressure - and it was only the lack of a fifth regular bowler that allowed the Oxonians to push on past a hundred.

Job half done - or was it? Glazebrook swept away our top and middle order - our first six batsmen out for just eleven runs between them. When Rob Wright joined Jim White at the wicket it all looked hopeless. But never say die - Rob blasted a miraculous sixty-three - his four partners hanging on for a grim 13 between them - extras the only other score to reach double figures - and with the Oxonians chivalrously allowing Simon Morecroft to bat again as we were one short - it was enough.

Alas poor Glazebrook - top-scored for his side, took 5-18, and still managed to end up on the losing side. But what an innings from Rob Wright - batting at eight - but nigh on three times as many runs from his bat as all his colleagues put together. A Presidential legend.
