v. KIWI INVITATION XI
2 SEPTEMBER 1989

LOST BY THREE RUNS
A HOME MATCH AT HAYDONS ROAD

A thrilling match - a nail-biting finish - right to the very last ball.

Our Kiwis had got up an invitation eleven to play us the previous week - and everyone enjoyed it so much we decided to do it again. The Kiwis to bat first this time round. A slowish start - Clarke falling to Paul Joyce in the eighth over with the score on 26. But then our own men Dave Sawtell and Rob Johnston enjoyed batting us around to put on forty for the second wicket. 66-2 after fifteen overs. Jerry Williams and David Doyle then applied the brakes - just twenty-two runs from the next ten overs - and two wickets fall. At twenty-five overs it's 88-4. An attempt to accelerate leaves the door open for Henry Macdonald to knock over Johnstone and then to tease out the tail - the innings ending with two stumpings in an over to give him 5-29. A fine bowling performance all round against a strong batting side.

Ian Bullock coming on first change inflicts some early damage - and the Presidents stutter to 46-4 - only Jerry reaching double figures. But a stand of fifty-nine between Loudon and Henry Macdonald for the fifth wicket takes us past 100 - and then the match turns. Henry is run out - and McCaskill takes out Loudon and Geoffrey Whittle in three balls. 105-4 has become 108-7. Forty more needed - but batting still to come.

Nelson strikes and big Martin Spence holes out for one - 111-8. But we move forward again - Simon Morecroft and Jim White put on twenty-one for the next wicket - 132-9 - just Rob Raeburn to come and time fast running out. A four from Rob takes us 145 - just another four needed - but time is up and the last over bowled - we have failed by a fraction. Well played all - some exceptional bowling from both sides - twelve maidens and nineteen wickets in the match - and some spirited knocks as well.
