THE PRESIDENT'S XI - MATCH DETAILS - BRAEMAR

THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

v. BRAEMAR
4 AUGUST 1990

LOST BY THREE RUNS
A HOME GAME AT HAYDONS ROAD

A curious match - made the more so by the scorers becoming so excited at the finish as to stop scoring. As best as it can be reconstructed, the Presidents were stretched thin - a muddle over fixtures requiring them to play an unprecedented two games in a weekend. They proved to be two of our closest matches ever.

Braemar bat - and wickets fall regularly. But Mark Jeremy scores steadily and most of the batsmen make a contribution. From 112-5 Braemar keep pushing on and despite every one of our six bowlers taking a wicket, a total of 183 of just under thirty overs looks pretty formidable.

We reply - and are soon deep in trouble. Grant Rudrum takes 3-2 in his first three overs - we are 14-3 and with some our our best hopes gone. Laurence Worms gets himself run out (again) - and it's 39-4. Newcomer Nigel Rawding and Ian Bullock claw us back and put on seventy for the next wicket - Nigel reaches his fifty with a six - and then elects to retire. Sporting enough - but we still need seventy-five.

Ian Bullock is stumped. Guy Martin - a brisk nine - but we are now in effect 123-7 in the twenty-fourth over - still needing sixty-one. Jim White joins Grant - and the match swings around. A stand of fifty for the next wicket (in just five overs) takes us beyond 170 - almost home. Jim run out - but a four and two singles to Simon Morecroft and we are on 180 - four needed. He falls to Alex Kairua.

And there the scoring stops. Osborne presumably bowled Barker for a duck - all over - all out - three runs short. Or did Nigel Rawding re-appear? - the "retired" is crossed through in the scorebook. However it happened, Steve Barker took a wicket with the first ball of his fourth over and there the match ended. The Presidents beaten by a mere three. And the next day was just as close.
