THE PRESIDENT'S XI - MATCH REPORT - SALIX

THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

v. SALIX
7 AUGUST 1999

WON BY EIGHT RUNS

A wet morning - but hot and steamy as we started play. Salix had turned up a couple short, so Brian Lake was seconded to them. The Presidents put in to bat - and struggle to get under way. Mike Edwards perishes cheaply and after ten overs it's just 26-1.

A double bowling change at that point brings mixed results - Henig concedes twenty-one from two overs, but Brown nips out a couple of wickets. Carey Ollerenshaw comes in to join Clive Lewis - and the shackles are briefly broken. At twenty overs it's eighty for three. Clive battles on to make a valiant fifty (eight fours) - but it's not until the twenty-fifth over that the 100 comes up. At thirty overs it's still only 114 - and by now eight wickets are down. We are rescued by a splenid stand of thirty-seven for the ninth wicket by Ravi Muthiah and Will Thorogood. A mistake in the count gives us an extra over - but we close on 149-9.

Salix to reply - but an economical start from the President's bowlers. Will Lake bowls straight through his seven overs - takes out Amselem - and at one point bowls fourteen dot-balls in a row. Laurence Worms concedes just eight runs from his first four overs - and Carey Ollerenshaw replaces him to do better still - seven overs for just thirteen runs - and neither of them concede a boundary all afternoon. Ravi Muthiah joins in and bags Shaw for a duck. At twenty overs it's 59-4 - ninety-one still needed at nigh on six an over.

But Brown is still there and starting to add boundaries to his repertoire. And Newton joins him. A stand of sixty-nine for the fifth wicket - the Presidents fail to take a wicket for nearly an hour. Twenty-five needed off twenty-four balls - and the two batsmen well set. But Ravi Muthiah comes back to clean bowl Newton - and then Laurence Worms returns to do the same to Brown. Nineteen now needed off twelve balls - and the bowlers hold their nerve. Salix finish eight short. A cracking game - alive to the very last over - bowled at almost eight o'clock in the evening.
