THE PRESIDENT'S XI - MATCH REPORT - ST ANNES ALLSTARS

THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

THE MAY DOUBLES - 2004

v. ST ANNES ALLSTARS
19 JUNE 2004

LOST BY NINE WICKETS

The prelude to this match, a fortnight of e-mails and phone calls, and left us with a team of nine on the day. My thanks to all those who did perform, guests, “ freshers” and regulars. Having been used to putting out a rugby XV, on a regular basis, I thought that an XI would be a doddle! Not so. So, let’s get recruiting for the next generation.

Anyway, to the game. Those who had offered their services were keen that the game went ahead, and so to a little tree-lined gladed oasis in the middle of Barnes Common. Noisy, with Jumbos (it’s a good job elephants don’t fly) passing over every minute and trains clattering past every few, but idyllic…a difficult environment to detect a snick! We won the toss and Carey nominated to bat on a somewhat green and spongy wicket. Unfortunately, wickets were quick to tumble, with batsmen being outwitted by the pace the ball was coming off the pitch, some accurate bowling and silly strokes. Ravi looked as if he was going to get his eye in, with a couple of good shots off the back foot into the covers, but top-edged, I think, a dolly. In the meantime, Mike Edwards was establishing himself, with various brief partners, in a powerful and aggressive innings of 37. He and Tony (11), unfortunately bowled, showed that the tail could wag, but not enough. As we were only nine men, Jones and Sheridan batted again, but we could only amount a final total of 81.

Unfortunately, when it came to the St.Annes’ innings, the wicket had settled and their good openers rattled off the requirement in something like 9 overs with the loss of one wicket. 82-1. It was still early, so a 10 over beer match ensued. St. Annes batted first and knocked up a reasonable, if not challenging, 90 runs for 2 wickets. The gauntlet had been thrown down which the Presidents picked up, in the shape of Edwards (38), again, and Ollerenshaw (35). An 8 wicket victory (92-2) was some consolation for an otherwise disappointing performance in the main game. The beer was nice afterwards, but when isn’t it?

Phew! That’s it. ‘Owz zat?
