A record number of players (17) for recent years registered interest in the annual double wicket competition. The weather forecast for the scheduled weekend was poor, but on the basis that the weather inevitably does the opposite of what was forecast, the Presidents XI annual double wicket competition took place on Saturday 6th May 2006. However, this time the forecast was right and steady rain started falling during the second pair’s innings. In true Presidents tradition, the participants stayed out and a full, but wet, afternoon of cricket was enjoyed (??) by all.
Some positive signs for the coming season were on display.
Prakash showed his eagle-eye and awesome power by smashing some wonderful boundaries and one shot, that it had been on a lower trajectory, would surely have landed on Wimbledon Broadway! Well done to Prakash and Nikesh for their total of 79 which only one pair got near challenging.
Newcomer, Khalid, appears to be good “find”, showing some fine skills both bowling and batting and will be a great addition to the Presidents XI in the coming season. Robert played well and this pair came within one run of equalling Prakash's and Nikesh's total.
Given the conditions of a very wet wicket, with the bowlers’ footmarks churning up the pitch, everyone showed great resilience to play through the rain and cope with the wet ball and slippery conditions underfoot. On the evidence, the Presidents should have a successful season.
