THE PRESIDENT'S XI - MATCH REPORT - MORDEN CORNITHIANS

THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

RAYNES PARK - MAY 2005

v. MORDEN CORINTHIANS
10 JUNE 2006

WON BY 29 RUNS

A hot and sunny day heralded the first Presidents game of the new season, a relief after two cancelled fixtures in the wettest May since 1979 (believe it or not!). Praba won the toss and elected to bat, thus keeping most of us in the shade until later in the afternoon.

Some decent bowling from Corrinthians saw off a couple of wickets before the innings was stabilised with a great 42 from Tanzeel and 32 from Danish. The heat was obviously getting to the Morden lot as catches were dropped like they were hot coals much to the frustration of the bowling attack and our relief.

Just when Morden thought things couldn’t get any worse, a couple of wickets fell bringing this year’s new arrival Khalid to the crease. Six fours and a brace of sixes later the visitors were wishing they had just stayed in the pub to watch the England game, and yet more catches were put to ground save one taken very coolly past the boundary rope by a rather attractive female member of the public, she was asked to take over at extra cover but declined gracefully! Khalid continued in this vein finally being caught for 71 close to the end of the innings. The Presidents had set a very respectable target of 206 for Morden to chase.

The visitors’ batting started well but was kept in check by some very tight bowling on our part. Always just under the run rate required we knew the victory was in sight but could be ruined by a loose spell with the ball or some silly fielding errors. Thankfully none arrived and with notable efforts from Nikesh (11 for 2 off 5 overs) and Danish (11 for 1 off 5) Morden only managed a score of 177–6 at the end of their innings.

A sunny afternoon with some enjoyable cricket, a win by 29 runs and England beating Paraguay 1-0, it doesn’t get much better than this!
