Praba was soon looking for volunteers for openers as one of the usual opener was bit late for a prompt start. Praba then invited Prakash and Jey to open the innings bearing in mind Prakash would continue his omnious form into this game and Jey to produce a stable start. Prakash facing the first ball of the innings from Jarlett their spearhead. Jarlett was quick and got some assistance from pitch for seam movement. Prakash was quick to adjust and gathered immediate momentum by some unbelivable backfoot shot which found the boundary and another four but this time bye. It was good start for the Presidents, Jey driving fluently of backfoot and both seem to be comfortable until fourth over when Prakash miscued a pull shot and was held. Soon Jey followed with a half-hearted turn towards square leg resulted in a well anticipated catch. Good start became a bad start within a matter of minutes, one of the great unpredictability aspect of the game at all levels. Chris Lewis and Laurence Bruggemann steady the ship for a partnership of forty runs, in which we saw some fluently covers drives from Laurence and crisp front/back foot drives from Chris. Presidents thought the tables were turned but not be, Chris rather unfortunate timed a ball to deep longoff resulting in a well judged catch just above the head. Another quick wicket, this time Laurence, a fluent stroke of his frontfoot in the air, held beautifully by Jarlett in short cover, that was a stunner at any level. Mike soon followed to pavilion and Presidents were tottering at 72 for 5. Stage set for Khalid and Danish and they took it ever so well, both batsmen complementing each other in their strokes, quick running between the wickets, converting one run to two, two runs to three and some gorgeous boundaries. It was treat to watch both batsman, Khalid ever so improvising with his reverse sweeps and straight dirves, Danish with his dashing cover drives and pull shots. Presidents back on track averaging at five runs per over. All of a sudden, Danish was trapped leg before wicket for deadly slow ball for which the batsman waited for ages. The score was now 135 for 6 and the partnership produced quick 63 and Khalid did a well made fifty. Praba joined Khalid and survived a very close call for a LBW. Soon adjusting to slowness of the pitch and bowlers both batsman turned the screw on. Khalid continued his merry way by showing his class, it was treat to see him bat from other end. This partnership made 75 of which only 14 contributed by Praba, which shows what an innings Khalid was playing. Praba was caught at deep square leg boundary. Later Tanzeel, Andrew and Tony formed a brief partnership with Khalid, who ended on a fine 100 not out. This was his highest score for Presidents with some chances, nevertheless it was one of the best knock by a President's player. Overall Presidents were happy with 237 on board. The second part of the innings was dominated by two things. One, quick fire from Prakash who took two wicket and in doing so splitted off stump. Next was rain, it started drizzling first but then got heavier and both captains agreed to call the match off. It was good a game Presidents, but a shame the game didn't last full. Nevertheless, there is always next game. Praba Thangarajah - Captain | |||||||
